When we started our Inside Out series back in May our goal was to get healthy, from the inside out (duh!). Well, Toronto-based holistic doctor, Dr. John Dempster and founder of The Dempster Clinic is back, and this time he’s talking the do’s and don’ts of gluten.
What is gluten?
Gluten has become a common ‘buzzword’ in many healthcare forums – and for good reason. Many health experts have identified gluten to be acting as a common irritant to many of us. The effect(s) of this irritation can often be very subtle and go un-noticed for years, however the effect of this can be devastating.
Fiction: Many believe that merely going wheat free eliminates all gluten.
Fact: Gluten is defined as a protein composite found in multiple grains and products – most commonly wheat, spelt, barley, rye, triticale, kamut, and oat. Gluten is not just found in foods, but can also be found in many cosmetics and personal care products. This is especially important for those with Celiac disease, a debilitating illness resulting from an extreme gluten response in which even the smallest exposure can have dramatic consequences.
